My 2020 Father's Day gift - a platter with the kids favorite foods I make

A few years ago, my kids made a fired up ceramic platter for me with all the foods that I make that they really like. It is a great gift that my wife came up with and my sister helped them make.If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then this is the acknowledgement then my kids hearts are really full. But the truth is, if you really want to know what they like most, it would undoubtably have to be….

SUSHI.

I first tried sushi while in high school. It was delicious then and is still delicious today. This is also my favorite food. The big problem with sushi is how unbelievably expensive it can be. But we have realized that if we make it ourself… and my ourself, I mean myself… it is a lot less expensive.

This started many years ago with the creation of the original wasabi brothers sushi burrito. My friend Paul and I came up with this. Rather than make small rolls, these are big and beautiful Chipotle sized burritos stuffed to the gills with sushi goodness.

So, today Joanna asked what we wanted for dinner Ava, with all her wisdom read my mind and suggested sushi. Now, I had a mountain of school work left to get done in the next 36 hours. But hey, how do you say no to sushi?

Probably the best part of sushi night is it doubles as date night. After all the rolls are made, cut up and topped, I plate up the kids portions. Then I make a platter for Joanna and I. The kids eat alone in the kitchen and Joanna and I go to our room and try as best as possible to have 30 minutes of quiet time.

But it never fails, 20 minutes later, the vultures come racing in to try to clean up the left over pieces we can’t finish on our own. After three or four times of this, eventually we give up and give them what is left. There are NEVER left overs on sushi night. Good times, Good times.

The only downside of making sushi is the time it takes. In a pinch, we make poke bowls. Which is nearly the same but takes a lot less time. So next time, maybe it will be time to introduce the kids to burrito sushi. Maybe.

By the time we were done there was only 26 hours left to still get a mountain of school work done. So how did it turn out, well more on that soon. But I’ll just say this…. sushi fuels my super power.
